Quite a few of our volunteers dedicate time to Food Finders to supplement their post-retirement activities, and often they come to us as a team, like married couple Carolyn and Michael Remley. The two, who give countless hours of their time, recently told us why Food Finders was the perfect fit for them.
Michael regularly witnesses the gratitude in the faces of folks as he pulls his truck up to deliver food he rescues from stores and restaurants. It’s not uncommon for a couple of people to step out of line to help unload the heavy bins and bags. Always amazed at the number of people being served at local agencies, Michael shared, “Meeting that need through volunteering with Food Finders has given special meaning to my retirement.”
Carolyn is a nurse who has always worked with children and families. Home visits to provide care for children in hospice exposed her to the reality that many families face food insecurity. Empty cupboards and refrigerators were common sights in these homes. Upon retiring two years ago, she felt the Food 4 Kids program was a natural choice for volunteering. Each week she joins others to pack nonperishable groceries into bags that are then delivered by a separate set of volunteers. Food 4 Kids has allowed Carolyn to care for children in a new way since her retirement.
We are so fortunate to have many dedicated individuals and couples generously volunteering their time with us to further our programs. Thank you, Carolyn and Michael, from the bottom of our hearts!
