Women In Action Reaching Out is a non-profit organization that provides healthy meals and nutrition classes to Seniors and at-risk families in the Long Beach and South Bay areas. I meet up with them at the North Long Beach Carmelitos Housing Project, which is home to 1,500 residents and has a long waiting list of people hoping to move in.
Women In Action Reaching Out partners with Carmelitos and uses their impressive kitchen and facilities to provide 50 Seniors with lunches, Monday through Friday. They prepare these lunches and then package and deliver them each day. I am told that, for some of these Seniors, this is the only meal a day that they are eating due to either low income or physical limitations. Women In Action Reaching Out also helps out the youth population at Carmelitos by providing after school snacks and supper Monday through Friday for up to 125 kids. They also prepare and then transport meals to three Boys & Girls Clubs in the South Bay area.
When asked what more Food Finders can be doing for them, they tell me that can use help stocking-up their supply of non-perishable food because they get requests from time to time from residents who need help making ends meet just until they get their next check. Women In Action Reaching Out tell me that they can also always use food containers to help with the transportation of their meals. Proud of the fact that they “make things happen”, Women In Action Reaching Out is passionate about changing lives.
